Snowmobiling is one of the most popular winter activities in Castlegar because of the quantity of snow we receive and the huge amount of terrain available. From flat, groomed trails to steep mountain passes, from decommissioned logging roads to large swaths of alpine meadows, Castlegar offers something for everyone.
The most popular spots for snowmobiling are managed by the non-profit Castlegar Snowmobile Association. Formed in the early 1990s, the CSA grooms 70 kilometres of trails in the Pass Creek area as well as stocks and maintains three warming huts there. The access for these trails are located within 25 kilometres of the city centre and the CSA charges $125 for a seasonal membership or $15 for a single-day trail pass.
One of the huts the Castlegar Snowmobile Association manages is called Frosty’s Cabin and it is now available for overnight stays. The cabin has four bunks, a barbecue, propane and firewood and can be rented for $48 per night. You must be a member to book it or you will need to buy a pass for each sled and each day of your stay. You can find out more information about the cabin by visiting www.csasled.org.
Of course there are a lot more areas in and around Castlegar in which to enjoy snowmobiling outside the trails managed by the CSA. To learn about those and for more information regarding snowmobiling, visit our article: “Where to Snowmobile in Castlegar.”
