Castlegar is a special place. Located in the valley where the Columbia and Kootenay Rivers meet, this is fertile ground for all things fun. There is a thriving artistic scene here, which makes sense given that this is the “Sculpture Capital of Canada.” There is a unique cultural heritage thanks to the Russian Doukhobors who settled here over a century ago. And there is more than enough outdoor recreation to keep every kind of enthusiast busy for a lifetime.
The province of British Columbia in Canada has become world-renowned for offering incredible experiences you won’t find anywhere else on earth. And Castlegar, located in the south-central region of BC, only a 30-minute drive north of the American border, is one of the best places in the province to enjoy such experiences. Whether you prefer land-based activities, such as scaling the walls at Canada’s only rock climbing pub, or water sports on the largest river in the Pacific Northwest, Castlegar is the little city in the valley that offers big entertainment in all forms.
This past year we challenged locally-based Stacked Films to capture many of these highlights in a film and the result is below. We love it. And we’re sure you will to. Take a few minutes to enjoy the visual splendour that is Castlegar, British Columbia, in the summertime.
The film begins with an overview shot, taken from the south of the little city and looking up the Columbia River towards the valley formed by the Arrow Lakes. We then see just to examples of the sculptures on display during Castlegar’s famous “Scultpurewalk,” which takes places every year between May and October. Residents and visitors can tour the downtown area admiring 30 different sculptures and then vote on the one they’d like the city to keep.
We then see scenes from Millennium Park, located in town, with its sandy beaches, natural swimming areas, and parkland. Next there are shots from various outdoor sporting venues from baseball diamonds to golf courses followed by the annual rock climbing festival, which takes place at the Lion’s Head Pub, every fall, usually the same weekend as the Pass Creek Fall Fair, which has been awarded the best small fall fair in British Columbia. Video from that event can be seen next in the film.
From there we’re treated to visuals of food and wine at various venues including the Little Bear Golf Course, and entertainment at The Woods Nightclub and Lion’s Head. And it all culminates with incredible visuals from the annual Canada Day fireworks.
We hope you enjoy the video and we invite you to see all of what Castlegar has to offer in person this summer.
